The 37001142 Maytag | Amana | Speed Queen Dryer Lint Filter is located in the front of the dryer drum below the door and is used to capture the lint as the hot air exits the dryer.

If you do not clean the lint filter after every load, lint builds up on the filter and is finally scraped off by the edge of the filter mount when you finally do pull it out.

That scraped off lint is sucked down by the blower and causes an internal or external dryer vent restriction.
